Things to Do with Kids in New York City

If you’re thinking of a family vacation on a beautiful island, why not try the island of Manhattan? With tons of fun and educational attractions to see, the city is a fantastic destination for a family vacation.

Statue of Liberty
One of the United States most recognizable symbols, the Statue of Liberty is one of the must-see spots in New York City. You can buy tickets ahead of time online, or head to Battery Park for tickets. You’ll go through security, then board a ferry that will treat you to fabulous views of lower Manhattan as well as the statue. Once on the island, you can stroll around and visit the cafeteria and gift shop. If you want to go up into the Statue of Liberty, make sure you get the tickets when you get your ferry ticket, because you won’t be able to get them on the island.

American Museum of Natural History
Watch the film “Night at the Museum” with the kids, then visit the place that inspired it. Families can see bones of dinosaurs that walked the earth millions of years ago, including the fierce tyrannosaurus rex. Dioramas show ancient native people in the costumes of their time, going about their daily tasks using typical tools. Don’t miss the life-size replica of a whale – the kids will need to see it in order to appreciate the true size of these creatures.

Giant Toy Stores
Treat the kids to an afternoon at a giant toy store, like FAO Schwartz, the American Girl Store, or the Toys R Us on Times Square. At FAO Schwartz kids can see and try out all kinds of toys, including the floor piano that Tom Hanks played on in the movie “Big.” The American Girl Store is a little girl’s paradise, filled with the characters from the American Girl book series, plus all their outfits and accessories like beds, armoires, horses, hope chests and more. Families can dine at a table outfitted with tiny chairs for the dolls, or enjoy a broadway style musical production. The Toys R Us store features several floors of toys as well as a giant moving dinosaur and an indoor ferris wheel.
